Judy's Story

My journey with Women and Work began in April 2006. I had spent many years at home raising my family-being a full-time Mum, and was now seeking to return to paid employment. At that time my self-esteem was very low, and I was unsure how to move forward.

The initial contact with Women and Work gave me hope however.

I signed up for 3 courses and started to attend the Support Group on a regular basis. During the next few months I learned basic computer skills, worked on my personal development in the Interpersonal Skills Course, and discovered job search skills through the FreshStart Course.

With the provision of expert teaching, compassion, and much encouragement, I gradually 'came out of my shell' and rediscovered who I was, and what I had to offer. I was learning to make decisions again, and take responsibility for my choices - indeed, to lose the fear of 'the world out there'. I was moving beyond my 'comfort zone' once more!

Attending the Support Group has enabled me to meet other women who are on a similar journey, and through the professional talks, informal discussions, laughter, and some tears, we've shared our hopes and learned anew together. The coffee is quite good also!

I'm volunteering with Age Concern at present, helping out at a local lunch club. It's wonderful to be able to contribute to society in a practical way again.

My confidence continues to grow, and I'm so grateful for the framework of excellent advice, practical information, and life skills given by Women and Work, which has enabled me to move forward.
