Sandra's Story
My name is Sandra and I came to the UK from Russia in 2003.
Other than some basic jobs back home, I had no real work experience and had no idea what I wanted to do. I was also very young and lacked confidence. Being in a foreign country and having to adjust to the way of life here were also part of the problem.
I was looking for a voluntary position to gain some experience of working in an office when I came across Women & Work. I attended several IAG sessions with an advisor, which helped me gain a sense of direction and put together my first CV. I then completed Fresh Start, a job-search skills programme, and an Interpersonal Skills course (both were of great benefit). During my time with Women & Work, I got to know some of the team members and it was from them that I drew inspiration and motivation. In particular, the late Shameem Ali, who inspired me to consider teaching as a career and let me assist her on several courses to gain teaching experience; Vicky Jones, who enrolled me on my first teaching course with MK Adult Education (C&G 7407 Teaching Adult Learners Stage 1); Sue Sapwell, who was there at any time when I needed advice and guidance; Avril Francome, who taught me on the IPS course and helped me believe in myself.
Since completing my first teaching course, I have undertaken significant professional development in the field of teaching and adult education (most recently - a Masters Degree in Education). I have worked in adult education and training since 2004 and my most recent role was as a Senior Tutor with Learndirect. I am currently working in corporate training.
